Data Storage options in Car PC
Though I built the Car PC and satisfied with the installations, I still feel the entire system is sluggish. The main reason is, I am using a old 800MHZ c3 processor. I am in the process of upgrading the PC hardware including the case. Here I have done few analyses on hard disk part, let’s see how it goes.
From my analysis, there are few options for main storage in a car pc
Active 12dB Crossover Lanzar VIBEX5 Vibe 3 Way Electronic Crossover Network with Remote Subwoofer ControlSSD IDE drives
Even though the Solid State Disks are the best performers the price of this disks are yet be bit costlier. But one thing to note is the prices of SSD are coming down and should be a good choice in the near future. How ever the total setup is very simpler when compared to the rest
PROS: faster boot times
CONS: price
Compact Flash cards
The compact flash cards have the limited write issue. EWF can be used to avoid frequent writes.
Setting up this with IDE requires additional hardware. And setting up EWF needs some more knowledge on the operating system. And have few limitations also. Over all the effort put on the setting up is bit high compared to other setups
PROS: cheap
CONS: Limited writes and need of IDE connector
PYRAMID CR-79G ELECTRONIC 3-WAY CROSSOVER Pyramid CR79G 3Way 6 Channel Electronic Crossover SystemUSB Flash Drives
Performance on flash drive is faster than a normal hard drive. Actually the spinner doesn’t have to wait. It can immediately start accessing data. Though the hardware setup is very simple(just plug the flash drive in the USB 2.0 port, the setting up of operating system to boot from is not only time consuming there are various factors that will run the entire setup into troubles. Please note that the BIOS should support booting from USB.
PROS: Very cheap and portable
CONS: Setting up the operating system, needs supported BIOS
